The new challenge for B day and A day

The new challenge was introduced to B-day on Tuesday, 2/23, and to A-day on Wednesday, 2/24.

It is expected that anyone who was present in class will have the rough draft of Part One in the ISN and ready for peer review.

The project is

Practical Assessment: Physical Properties and SC.8.N.1 (Scientific Methods and Data Analysis)
It is now 15 years in the future and you have been hired as a consultant by NASA. Your job is to design an experiment or series of experiments to be conducted in a glove box. You must write the complete directions for the procedure using only the materials that NASA will supply.
The problem to be investigated is the sample of materials that were retrieved from an unknown asteroid. NASA wants to test the individual components of the sample, but first the sample has to be deconstructed or broken down into its key components. NASA has limited you to only using the physical properties of the material to deconstruct it. You must not only develop a hypothesis or hypotheses, and procedures; but you must run the experiment to gather data and write a conclusion. You will be given an analog to use for the experiment that NASA is certain is very similar to the unknown sample. There are indications from previous studies that the sample contains at least 3 substances. REMEMBER, the NASA techs will replicate your directions in a GLOVE BOX so they will not be able to do any very fine motor tasks.
Materials provided by NASA include a plastic cup, oil, water, filter paper or coffee filter, foam plate and a transfer pipette. You may request access to other lab equipment.
You will need to complete a formal proposal of procedures before you get your materials (Foldable). Start with your rough draft in your ISN.
·        Problem: Use the principals of physical properties to deconstruct a sample for further study.
·        Question: How can physical properties be used to separate the individual components of a sample?
·        Variables: Identify the tested (manipulated or independent) variable; the outcome (responding or dependent) variable, and the variables held constant.
·        Hypothesis or hypotheses (you may need more than one if you have subsets of your experiment); use the variables to develop the hypotheses..
·        Materials
·        Procedures (Be very systematic)
After completing your procedures and hypotheses and receiving approval you will be given the materials to run the experiment. Keep your notes in your ISN and include the following for the final report.
·        Data
·        Results
·        Conclusion

Another Bonus Opportunity for 3rd nine grading period.

I heard about this and wanted to share it with you. You may earn one bonus point for a submission.

Here is another great opportunity to have students, familes, the general public, become involved with the exploration of our solar system by having their artwork included on the spacecraft to be used in an asteroid sample return mission.
The mission is OSIRIS-REx to asteroid Bennu.
"Your submission may take the form of a sketch, photograph, graphic, poem, song, short video or other creative or artistic expression."
Go to this web site for more information: http://www.asteroidmission.org/WeTheExplorers/

Bonus Opportunity for 3rd nine weeks ( one of at least 2)

You may attend the Jacksonville Science Festival on Saturday, February 27, 2016.  This opportunity is worth one grade point. If you participate in the chalk walk contest and other activities you may receive up to 2 points. For more information go to  www.JacksonvilleScienceFestival.org
or call 904-493-3535.

The hours on Saturday are from 10am - 3 pm at Friendship Fountain Park/MOSH.

You must take pictures of yourself at the event showing your participation and you must print out the pictures yourself or have them printed at a shop that prints pictures. No e-mails will be accepted. If you can't take a picture and print it out then write a report about what you did and have your parents sign and date it.

All Students should complete the following for next week (February 16-19)

Both A day and B day students should complete the 6-2 Virtual Lab. Write the question, hypothesis,  plan that's replicable, data tables, results and conclusion in your ISN.
If you haven't completed Lesson 6-3 either the digital lesson where you take notes or the lesson in the book, you need to do that by the first class of the week. Fusion pp 338-339 is also due. All of this practice will help you with next weeks assignments and challenges.

There will be lab work available each day so wear the appropriate shoes and clothing.

Monday's assignments

1.  Bell Ringer Complete the worksheet “Calculating for Density, Mass, and Volume” that you will receive from the teacher. Write all the equations showing values and units before you use a calculator. Remember,
1 ml is the same as 1 cm3. Do both sides and turn it in to the teacher.
2.  Complete all work from Thursday, 2/4 that you have not finished. See blog post for directions.
3.  Achieve 3000 Complete a third article. If you scored less than 75% on any of the articles then you should do a 4th article. You will report the 3 highest scores from the 4 articles. The complete directions can be found on the earlier blog post.
4.  Fusion: You will complete the Digital Lesson for 6-3 and Fusion pp. 338-339.

Bday students will have Thursday and Monday classes in the computer lab. All of these assignments should be finished before class on Wednesday. Additional work will be assigned on Monday also. Do not spend all of your weekend finishing these assignments since you need to start reviewing for the FCAT on your own.

Complete Brainpop quiz by logging onto www.braimpop.com  using palmbeach and palmbeach as the user name and password. Watch the video for Measuring Matter and take the quiz (on paper). You can get a sheet from the teacher. Check your answers by doing the review quiz.

Achieve 3000

Assignments for 2/3 A day: Everything is due on Tuesday, 2/9.

Due to the majority of the next A day being committed to the high school field trip, many of you will not be in class on Friday. As a result, I have assigned the following and all are due on Tuesday, 2/9. Of course you had most of the period to work on these assignments today if your previous assignments were up to date. If you were absent you may stop by on Friday morning before Period 1A to pick up the appropriate worksheets. Of course, you may always print your own Gizmo packets.

Complete Brainpop quiz by logging onto www.braimpop.com  using palmbeach and palmbeach as the user name and password. Watch the video for Measuring Matter and take the quiz (on paper). You can get a sheet from the teacher. Check your answers by doing the review quiz.
