Delay in posting grades

Sorry all. I posted many grades before I had to leave school today. Yes, I did spend some of my planning time teaching one of Mr. Geary's classes. They needed instruction in Ionic bonding and he had to set up computers for tomorrow's test. We both did what needed to be done. I attempted to access the gradebook from home and was unsuccessful. I will post more after testing tomorrow as time allows and will stay after school to attempt to finish. After all, these are FCAT review grades and it's time to start posting the Bridge to High School grades.

Good luck on your reading tests on Wednesday and Thursday.

If you are missing a quiz or activity

Some of you have not taken all of the quizzes that go with the FCAT Buckets. If you want to do them at home you can download each missing quiz from Mr. Geary's blog. He has posted all of the activities and quizzes. I will accept the quizzes through Monday, 5/5. All late or missing FCAT bucket work must be submitted on or before 5/5. All Bridge to High School Chemistry Buckets and Gizmo Assessment Questions from last week and this week should be finished by Monday also.

I am still in the process of updating grades.  The Chemistry Buckets will be entered starting on Friday since everyone should have completed Buckets 1-4 by now.

Grades will be updated by Tuesday evening

I have not been able to access the on-line gradebook since Tuesday due to other commitments and lack of computer access to the program. Apologies to all. I intend to update on Monday and Tuesday. After that we can look at what you need to catch up on - if anything. I will be back in school on Monday. My granddaughter appreciated your having a sub so that she could have me take care of her. See you all in class.
PLS

Tournament Earth is Over.

Tournament: Earth -- The Winner!

The second annual Tournament: Earth has come to an end, and the winner is a familiar face. In 2013, a submarine volcano off of the Canary Islands took the first championship. This year, the entire island chain got in on the action. "Trailing the Canaries," the #2 seed in the art bracket, romped through the tournament in 2014. The image showed interesting wind and wave patterns in sunglight on the lee side of the islands. The Canary Islands have a lot of fans!

FCAT REVIEW Home Learning Assignments and BUCKETS

On Monday and Tuesday (B day and A day) each student should have 2 lessons from the electronic Fusion book. Yes, I now have granted you all access to the 8th grade book also (I think). Make sure you take notes in your ISN and have them ready for checking during your class next week.

Starting Monday (B day) and Tuesday (A day) the Home Learning Assignment changes. You will be required to do a UNIT from the electronic books. Then you will take the UNIT Quiz. Either print out the quiz and glue it into your ISN or write out the questions and supply the correct answer. These assignments will count for your 4th nine weeks grade.

Access to the Electronic Fusion books that read to you and have the electronic lessons and the Unit quizzes is through www.thinkcentral.com
Use you student log in and password. If you attended a Duval School in 6th or 7th grade try to log in through that school's name. Several students have been successful this way.
Go to My Library to access the books. You should have 6th, 7th, and 8th grade access as of today.

BUCKETS are the new review style. Each class period there will be at least 3 buckets for each person to dip into and complete. This week our buckets were: Punnet Squares and Pedigrees, Rock Cycle, Law of Superposition and the Fossil Record, and Distance Time Graphs. If you were absent it is your responsibility to get the materials and complete the buckets.

SUPPLIES
I suggest that you take time to review what supplies you have ready for your use in your bookbag. You need a glue stick  and tape everyday for the buckets. You also should have your own color pencils. These will really be necessary on 4/14 if a well laid plan comes together. The classroom supplies are dwindling. We are out of tissues. Several of the staplers have been broken through student negligence (and just left on the counter for someone to deal with). The new color pencils I bought in January aren't new any more. In fact, they are in pitiful shape so you need your own. The rulers have been broken and so have the table boxes - and I'm not buying any more for this year. If you need tissues why not carry some? Get some small packs and keep on in a pocket or your bookbag. I will supply scissors as long as the pairs we have last. There will be some tape available and a few glue sticks, but they only go so far.  You should be a self-sufficient student. There are individual tape dispensers, glue stick, and staplers that are fairly portable and inexpensive. Why not take the time this weekend to review your supplies and re-stock. Schools not over until we wave goodbye on the last day.

BONUS for 4th nine weeks- last chance

No, it's not March Madness, but it is exciting. Read the message from NASA and vote by the deadline. Bring proof of voting to earn your bonus. Friday means Friday, April 4.

Tournament: Earth -- The Finals are here!

Last year, a longshot image showing an underwater volcanic eruption near the Canary Islands came from nowhere to win our first-ever Tournament Earth. The championship round of the 2014 tournament has arrived, and yet another Canary Islands image seems poised to capture the crown. However, "Trailing the Canaries" will have some stiff competition in "Activity at Kliuchevskoi," a spectacular shot of ash streaming from one of the highest and most active volcanoes on the Kamchatka peninsula. Vote for your favorite by Friday at 4 p.m. EDT / 8 p.m. UTC.

Finishing up the grading period

Last week CUBE took a prominent place in your test taking skills vocabulary. Remember to use this skill for all tests including the FCAT.

C - Circle unfamiliar words or vocabulary
U - Underline important content
B - Box the question that you have to answer
E - Eliminate the incorrect responses and take a moment to Explain why the response you chose is the correct response.

Thursday and Friday found us revisiting the layers of the atmosphere and having a class debate about which layer of the atmosphere is the best layer.

Monday and Tuesday were Plate Tectonics review days. Not only a review lesson, but also a quiz about plate tectonics.

FCAT Review lesson notes were collected. Each person was responsible for submitting notes for 2 review lessons.

Your CGA score will be posted to the CGA/FCAT review section of the gradebook.

All LATE FCAT Explorer reports will be posted. Your score is penalized 10% for being late.

The bonus points will be posted. You will earn a point for each time you participated in the Tournament Earth 2014.

What's your home learning? Look at your bucket list (from CGA 3 data). With which benchmarks do you need the most help? Those are your low scores. Go to www.thinkcentral.org and log in. Use the 6th and 7th grade on-line books to help you review. Complete an on-line lesson each day and take notes.
